Network Security

Network security is mandatory for businesses, no matter how large or small. Your business network is the central nervous system of your business and you should not risk invasion or intrusion. Start with a solid security policy and enforce that policy when you manage your network. Train your network security staff well and perform random checks to be sure security is enforced.

Network security should start with your staff. Design a user access system that limits use of network drives and access to information based on the role a user plays. Terminate contract users and terminated employees as soon as they walk out the door.

If your employees work remotely, and you allow them VPN (virtual private network) access, use a security token to further protect your network. Security tokens provide a different password every few seconds and the user must sign in with that password within a certain period of time or acquire a new password through the token. Security tokens offer another layer of network protection and a multi-layered network security system is much preferred over a single security method.

Use standard business active directory windows and network security. Password protocol includes the number and type of characters to be used in a password and the frequency with which users must change passwords. The protocol also dictates the number of failed attempts a user is allowed before they are locked out of the system.

Anyone who has technical access to the network should undergo a thorough background check including a drug test, a thorough check of references and previous criminal record. Rotate your staff often enough to allow them to be trained in all aspects of network protection and security issues so you always have coverage if someone is on vacation, ill or terminated.

With the proper planning and expertise, you can protect your network and business form network intrusion and guarantee network security.
